I’ve sung many different Christmas Carols through years and watched many different nativity plays and heard many different sermons, but there is one scene in the Christmas story that I’ve never heard sung, never seen acted out and never heard preached on. It’s the account of the massacre of the baby boys in Bethlehem by Herod and the subsequent flight of Jesus and his family to Egypt. For many Christmas morning brings Christmas mourning! How does grief fit with Christmas? This text outlines three truths about grief. But our text also shows us three thing are true about God in the midst of our grief. Find hope this in the midst of grief this Christmas!

Do you know what strikes me as I pour over the nativity accounts in Matthew & Luke? I cannot find a single character in the Christmas story that wasn’t afraid at some point! Here is a list I made: Zechariah, Mary, Joseph, the shepherds, Herod, the Magi, the parents of the boys massacred in Bethlehem, etc. We like to sanitise the Christmas story, but the thread of fear is woven throughout the tapestry of that first Christmas. These are real people with real fears! God wants to speak into their fears as much as he wants to speak into ours! Join Mary & Joseph and experience through their eyes the emotion of fear and how God offers deep comforting truth that enabled them to overcome their fears and move out into the unknown of obedient worship. Emmanuel ‘ God with us ‘ makes all the difference!
